Mobile (AL) Council defends immigrants

Numerous officials from the Mobile (AL) City Council spoke up in defense of Haitian immigrants, challenging people who claimed to be Christians about the hatred they are spreading.

Councilman Cory Penn: “Jesus wasn’t from America. Would he be welcomed here? Would we turn Jesus away? We got to be very mindful that we are not spreading the wrong (message) because your words matter. When you target certain groups … it sounds like these group of people are dangerous just because they are from a different country or a different group.”

Councilman William Carroll: “To say a group of people who come in here will not be productive, in my mind, is very inappropriate. My wife is extremely beneficial to this city. I really take exception to those statements. I really do.” Carroll’s wife was born in Haiti.

Councilman Joel Daves: “Unless we have a Native American in this room, everyone here is an immigrant. And so, we need to be very careful when we attack people coming into this country seeking a better life.”
