“An opportunity to live up to Lincoln”

In the Washington Post, Arlington, VA resident Rob Hornstein wrote:

The nation is still struggling mightily to free itself from the weight of bigotry and the appeal of rank racial demagoguery. It remains uncertain whether demagoguery will carry the day. Shortly after Lincoln’s death, Frederick Douglass, speaking about Lincoln’s character, explained that “some men . . . can face death and dangers, but have not the moral courage to contradict a prejudice or face ridicule.” All Americans of every stripe and persuasion should stand against the ugly prejudice and toxic divisions Mr. Trump has unleashed and affirm the humanity of our Haitian and Haitian American neighbors. We still have an opportunity to live up to Lincoln’s ideals.
